A short introduction to Archaeology in Milverton and the wider district.
This brief article is about MDA archive folder 1461. It contains a number of original tracings drawn by (or at least attributable to) Howard Davies which gives an insight into the methodology, planning and thinking of his field work when exploring the inner and outer reaches of Milverton during the period of his residency here in the village.
Most of Howard’s field notes and reports are directly as a result of discovery and analysis when on the ground in fields or back gardens (with permission and / or invitation) locating many diverse and interesting artefacts. Some of these are held in Taunton Museum and a few are held within the MDA.
The following images provide a challenging view of Milverton as a potential hillfort with motte and bailey with placement of specific periods of historical significance based on archaeological finds, their interpretation and the necessary analogue desk top research. From the original tracings it is strongly suggested amongst many things, a revised location of the long-lost chantry perceived as being NW of the main church but perhaps outside the existing graveyard boundary’s perimeter; possible tunnels, mysterious structures and likely ridge paths now covered by housing developments.
